' The kbiiitiea of tUo man were too groat to bo questioned, his integrity beyond donbt, , hii devotion to tbo condition of Lis ooun try pre-eminent in thin age of venal trai ton and demagogues, and, in addition, bis simplicity of manner and the frank ploaa witness of his address have mado him generally beloved in thin community tho only member of this Administration who was regarded in any other light by the people than that of a more abstraction or a. colli, solflsu mass of brntality and stn niditT. It is rather remarkable that tho Radical party, with all its boasted philan thropy, has furnished to tho people only one popular hero, only one. man who was beloved, and the affection bestowed upon him arose principally from sympathy with the Stan, because of his use astiination, and did not descend either to his widow or her children. MoUlellan and Iiawlins, who were objects of the people's love, wn Demd crals and never changed their party aflilia , tions. Lincoln alone was always a Repub lican. Does it not seem a mockery for this party to pretend it is endorsed by the people when only one of its nietnbets ever . commanded the attentions of that people I ltawllns' body was embalmed shortly afttir death, bv the same embaliuors who did that mournful duty for President Lincoln Immediately after this was done, the re mains were taken to the room in the War Department occupied by General Suorman as the oflioe of tun General Commanding the Armies of the United States, ilere tho jjndertiker had bee n at work, draping the -windows aud doors aud picture frames in black bombazine, and erecting a catafal que. The latter consists of two steps, its ieogth at the base being nine feet, and in tbreath five feet, and that portion which the -coffin rests on six and a half feet iu length and two and-a-half in breadth. This is covered with black cloth, draped neatly with crape and bombazine. Ilere the -corpse was deposited, aud large numbers of people passed through the room to gaze upon tne face oi tue ueau man. xne ni neral takes place to-morrow. The Depart menta are closed nntil after the obsequies .'are over, and the banks and other places of private business will also suspend oper ations nntil the funeral is over. Many hundreds of persons from other cities will iparticipste in the last exercises in honor of ithe only statesman and puro man connect ed with O rant's administration. Kodom sad Gomorrah would have been spared the fire and brimstono that fell from Heaven . if ten righteous men had dwelt therein. but oulv Lot was found there. The' Lot of the Administration is gone, called away bv God himself, and if Grant an 'pofnU in"his stood either of the most prominent candidates for the nlaoe, woman murderer Holt or mous tache Logan, it will be proof positive that the Almighty boa foredoomed tbo ad ministration to at least joAilio'il damnation as speedy and overwhelming as be did tho . itiea of the dead sea. The personal dam - nation of the Radical loaders has already been definitively settled by the Fiend, and the Lobd, saving given them np long ago, takes no interest in their futuro welfare. The only regret I liavo in the matter is that the Devil is so tardy in claiming bis own. Another Radical " dogdo," to put more money into the pockets of Radical mem . bers of Congress and speculators, is on It "carpet. The "National Republioaa'' of this morning, says : " Correspondence of a private character, between members of Congress ami parties connectel with the revsnne service here, plainly indicates a determination on the part of the former to increase the whiskey tax. In 1M(1 he waa elected to (JongreM), where lio participated largely in thei uneiit debates, llo earnoatly opposed the repeal of the then bankrupt law. Jn imj hn wan nominated for re. election to Congress, but declined, proler ring to return to tho practice of his pro ffw.mii. In tho ineanlinio tho votes of tho whin party in the Legislature woro given to him for a vacant neat in the Hcniito. From 1M5 to .1852 ho was in private life, devoting himnclf to professional pursuits, aud during that period wim awociated witli Daniel Webster in an important caso be fore tho Stipeiuc Court at Washington, in which lm had to contend agaiunt the weight and influence of . Judgo Story's opinion and drcinon agninst his cliont in tho court below, and wan successful, the dooision of that eminent judge being re versed. Onoo during this period, in 1850, Mr. Fcssenden was eloetod to (Jongrcss, but his seat was given to his competitor through an error in tho returns. - In 1850 ho was again elected to tho Stato Legisla ture, and was chosen by one branch, tho Hcuatc, as United States Senator ; the Honse,' being democratic, did not concur. In 1851 ho was again a member of the Legislature, whioh was democratic in both branches. The Kansas-Nebraska question uaviug now becomo an important political element, Mr. Fessonden wa.i chosen United States Senator by both branchos, ou tho first ballot, by s union of the whigs and fruo-soil demoorats, whion proved a preliminary sUp towards the establishment of tho republican party in Maine. Mr. Fessonden took hfs seat in the Senate February 23, 1854. and on the 3d of Msroh distiuguishod himself by a powerful speech against the Nebraska bill. In 1859 he was unanimously ro-elooted as United States Bouator, and after the resignation of Mr. Chase as Secretary of the Treasury he '.was appointed to and accepted that important position, but did not bold it long, lie was then again eleotod by the Legislature of his State to tho Senate. Mr. Fessenden held an exalted rank as a clear-headed and logical debater, and commanded the res pect of his political opponents by bis com paratively liberal ideas and bearing.
